Dryer Not Heating? Common Causes and How to Fix Them

6 min read

If your dryer tumbles but clothes come out still damp, you have a heating problem. Here's what could be wrong and what you can do.

Safety First

Before troubleshooting, unplug your dryer. For gas dryers, also turn off the gas supply. Never attempt repairs you're not comfortable with.

Common Causes

1. Clogged Lint Trap and Vent

The most common cause of dryer heating problems is restricted airflow due to lint buildup.

**Check:** - Clean the lint trap before every load - Inspect the vent hose for kinks or clogs - Check the exterior vent for obstructions - Have the vent professionally cleaned annually

2. Thermal Fuse (Electric Dryers)

The thermal fuse is a safety device that blows if the dryer overheats. Once blown, it must be replaced.

**Note:** This is a common result of clogged vents. Always check venting before or after replacing a thermal fuse.

3. Heating Element (Electric Dryers)

The heating element can burn out over time, especially if the dryer has been overheating due to restricted airflow.

4. Gas Igniter (Gas Dryers)

The igniter lights the gas to create heat. If it fails, the dryer won't heat but will still tumble.

5. Gas Valve Solenoids (Gas Dryers)

These open and close to let gas flow to the burner. Faulty solenoids can prevent heating.

6. Cycling Thermostat

This thermostat regulates the dryer's temperature. If faulty, the dryer may not heat or may overheat.

DIY vs. Professional Repair

**DIY-friendly:** - Cleaning lint trap and vent - Checking for kinks in vent hose - Cleaning exterior vent

**Call a professional for:** - Replacing thermal fuse - Replacing heating element - Gas igniter or solenoid issues - Any gas line concerns

Prevention Tips

  1. Clean the lint trap after every load
  2. Inspect and clean the vent annually
  3. Don't overload the dryer
  4. Use appropriate heat settings
  5. Ensure the vent hose isn't kinked or crushed

A well-maintained dryer should last 10-13 years. Regular vent cleaning is the single most important maintenance task.
