Refrigerator Repair in San Diego

This is the everyday machine in the kitchen or the garage, not a built-in column. Freestanding refrigerators fail in a small number of well-known ways, and the symptom usually tells you which compartment the fault is in before anyone takes a panel off.

Fresh food warm, freezer cold

This is the most common call and the easiest to place. One evaporator in the freezer cools both sides, and a fan pushes that cold air up through a duct into the fresh food compartment. If the fan has failed, or the evaporator is iced over and blocking the airflow, the freezer copes and the fridge does not. Put your hand at the vents at the top of the fresh food section: no air moving there, with a cold freezer, is the whole diagnosis. From there it is the fan motor, the defrost heater or the sensor that runs it.

Water under the crispers, ice in the base

A sheet of ice under the freezer floor, or water collecting under the salad drawers, is nearly always a blocked defrost drain. Melt water from each defrost cycle is meant to run down a tube to a tray over the compressor. When that tube silts up or freezes at the top, the water backs up and finds its way into the cabinet instead. Clearing and re-routing the drain is a proper repair rather than a mop-up, and it is worth doing early: the same water reaches the base insulation and the floor underneath if it is left.

Never cycling off, or not cooling at all

A compressor that runs without a break is either short of capacity or fighting a dirty condenser. Coils under and behind the machine collect dust, and in a garage or a coastal house they also collect lint and salt, which insulates them. Clean coils and a working condenser fan solve more of these than any part swap. If the compressor is not running at all, and you hear a click every few minutes, that is the start relay and overload rather than the compressor itself, which is good news as repairs go.

Built-in refrigeration columns and under-counter built-ins are a separate trade with different parts, different sealed systems and different access, and San Diego has specialists who do only that. If you describe the unit when you call, we will tell you honestly whether it is ours or theirs before anyone drives out. That saves you a visit fee on a machine we would not be the right people for.

Questions we get asked

Do you work on built-in Sub-Zero refrigerators?

No, and that is deliberate. Built-in columns and under-counter units need different parts, different sealed-system work and a different way in, and there are San Diego shops that do nothing else. We look after freestanding kitchen and garage machines, which is a different job in everything but name.

How cold should the fridge actually be?

Around 37°F in the fresh food compartment and 0°F in the freezer, measured with a thermometer in a glass of water rather than read off the display. Panel readings are set points, not measurements, and on many models they carry on showing the target while the cabinet drifts.

Why is the back of my fridge frozen solid?

The defrost system has stopped clearing the evaporator. Every fridge ices up as it runs and relies on a heater cycling on to melt it away. When the heater, the sensor or the control fails, the ice builds until it blocks the air path, and cooling falls away compartment by compartment.

Is a garage refrigerator worth keeping?

It is, if the unit is rated for it and the coils are kept clean. Inland garages get hot enough in summer to push an ordinary refrigerator past what it was built for, and older models can stop cooling properly when the ambient temperature drops in winter as well.

Do you carry parts with you?

The common ones: fans, relays, thermostats, gaskets and defrost parts for the mainstream brands. Anything model-specific is ordered against the serial number, because fitting the nearly-right part to a refrigerator is how a second fault gets created.
