Garbage Disposal Repair in San Diego

Disposals are simple, which is why the diagnosis is mostly about listening. A hum, a silence and a click each point somewhere different, and two of the three are usually sorted on the spot. The other common call is a leak, where everything depends on which joint the water is coming from.

Humming but not turning

The motor has power and the plate is jammed. Something hard has wedged between the impeller and the grind ring, usually a bone fragment, a fruit stone or a piece of cutlery. Leaving it humming cooks the motor, so switch it off at the wall first. The fix is to free the plate with the hex key in the base and remove whatever caused it, then reset the button underneath. If the plate turns freely afterwards and the unit still hums, the start winding or the capacitor has gone and the disposal is at the end of its life.

Silent when you throw the switch

Three things, in order. The reset button on the underside trips after an overload and stays out until it is pushed; that alone accounts for a fair share of dead disposals. Then the switch, whether it is on the wall or an air switch on the sink top, which fails more often than people expect. Then the unit itself. A disposal that is dead with a good switch and a reset that will not hold has usually reached the point of replacement rather than repair, and on most models that is a straightforward swap onto the existing mount.

Where the leak is coming from

There are only three places, and they mean very different things. The top, at the sink flange, is a seal that has dried out and is usually resealed and remounted. The side, where the dishwasher hose or the waste elbow connects, is a gasket or a cracked fitting. The bottom, out of the body itself, is a corroded shell, and that cannot be repaired at all: the water is inside the motor housing. Trace it dry before deciding, because water running down the outside of the unit looks the same from below wherever it started.

The dishwasher connection

A good number of the disposal calls we take are really dishwasher calls. The disposal takes the dishwasher drain hose into a stub on its side, and that stub is sealed with a knockout plug when the unit is new. If the plug was never punched out during the install, the dishwasher will not drain at all and the disposal gets the blame. A partly blocked stub does the same thing more slowly. Either way, checking that connection is the first thing to do when a new disposal and a bad-draining dishwasher appear in the same month.

Questions we get asked

It hums. Have I burnt out the motor?

Almost certainly not, if you switched it off quickly. A hum means the motor is getting power and something is stopping the plate. Free the jam, press the reset and it usually runs. Repeated humming with the switch left on is what damages the winding, and that is a different conversation.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a disposal?

It depends where the fault is. A jam, a reset, a switch or a flange seal are all worth repairing. A failed motor or a leaking body is not, because the parts are not sold separately and the labour to fit them would exceed a new unit. We say which at the visit.

What should never go down a disposal?

Fibrous vegetable waste, coffee grounds, fat and bones cause most of the jams we clear. Fat is the worst of them because it goes down warm and sets in the waste pipe further along, where the disposal cannot help. Cold water while it runs, and afterwards, does more good than anything sold in a bottle.

The sink backs up when the disposal runs. Is that the disposal?

Usually not. If the sink drains slowly with the disposal switched off as well, the blockage is downstream in the waste pipe and the disposal is only pushing water at it. We check the trap and the branch before touching the unit, because replacing a working disposal changes nothing.

Will you fit a disposal I have bought myself?

Yes, if it suits the sink and the existing mount. Most brands share a standard three-bolt fitting, so a like-for-like swap is straightforward. A change of size or brand can mean a new mounting assembly and sometimes a different waste elbow, which we would check before starting.
