Appliance repair questions, answered

The questions that come up most on the phone, grouped by what they are about: booking a visit, what things cost, the faults we see most on laundry and dishwashers, and where in San Diego we work. If a question is not answered here, ask it on the phone.

Booking and visits

How do I book a visit?

By phone or through the online booking page, which lets you choose the day. There is no form on this site and nothing to submit. Have the appliance type, the brand and the symptom ready; the model number helps too, and on laundry it is usually on the door frame.

Do you work weekends?

Seven days a week, weekends included. Weekend slots on laundry tend to fill first, so if a washer has locked shut with a load inside it is worth calling early rather than waiting to see whether it clears on its own. It usually does not.

Can you get to a machine in a high-rise?

Yes, and Downtown, Gaslamp Quarter and Bankers Hill are a regular part of the round. Buildings usually want a certificate of insurance on file and a service lift booked before a technician is let up, so say which building it is when you call and that can be arranged first.

Cost and quotes

What does the visit cost?

$89, flat, for the call-out and the diagnosis. It is waived when you approve the repair, and it does not vary by appliance, by day of the week or by neighbourhood. The repair itself is quoted once the fault has been found, and never before.

Why will you not quote the repair on the phone?

Because the same symptom points at several different parts. A dishwasher standing in water might have a blocked filter, a failed drain pump or a check valve stuck open, and those are not the same job. Naming the fault first is what makes the number reliable.

Do you charge extra for difficult access?

No. Unstacking a laundry pair, drawing a dishwasher out of a run of cabinets or pulling a machine forward in a closet is part of the visit, not an addition to it. The only figure that changes between jobs is the repair quote, and that is agreed before work starts.

Laundry, dishwashers and the rest

My washer finishes with water still in the drum. What is it?

Usually something blocking the path out rather than a dead pump: a coin or a sock in the filter housing, a kinked drain hose, or a silted pressure-switch hose that stops the control seeing the level fall. The filter and the sensor reading between them settle it on the visit.

The dryer runs but the clothes stay damp.

On an electric dryer that is commonly a failed heating element or a blown thermal fuse, and on gas it is more often the igniter or a flame sensor. Restricted venting causes both, by overheating the cabinet until the safety cuts out, so the duct gets checked along with the part.

Glassware comes out gritty. Is the dishwasher finished?

Rarely. In most of the machines we see it is a clogged filter and spray arms, a wash pump losing pressure, or a diverter valve not sending water to the upper arm. Hard water scale on the arm jets does the same thing and washes off. None of those means the machine is finished.

Where we work, and what we do not touch

Which neighbourhoods do you cover?

Twenty-six, centred on Downtown San Diego and reaching La Jolla, Point Loma, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Mission Valley, Mira Mesa, City Heights, Clairemont, Normal Heights and North Park, with Carlsbad, Coronado, Chula Vista and Poway on the wider route. Gaslamp Quarter and Bankers Hill are covered too.

Do you repair built-in Sub-Zero or Wolf equipment?

Not as a headline service. This business handles the everyday machines: laundry, dishwashers, ovens, microwaves, freestanding refrigerators, freezers, wine coolers, ice makers and disposals. A panel-ready built-in column or a professional range is better placed with a specialist who works on nothing else.

Which brands do you carry parts for?

Eighteen are covered, led by Samsung, Maytag, Bosch, GE and LG. The van stocks the failures that recur on those: drain pumps, door locks, thermal fuses, inlet valves, elements and belts. Less common names such as Miele, Smeg and La Cornue usually mean the part is ordered in.

The cycle would start and then cancel itself after a few minutes. A faulty turbidity sensor kept telling the control to abort. He had it diagnosed in about twenty minutes and carried the part with him.

Fifties house on its original waste line, and the dishwasher drained slowly and then stopped. He proved the drain pump was the problem by testing it directly rather than blaming the plumbing, and replaced it.

Wall oven died right after a self-clean cycle, which I gather happens a lot. Its thermal fuse had blown and the door lock motor was jammed shut. He replaced both and opened the door without forcing anything.

It walked out from the wall on every spin and banged into the dryer beside it. Two shock absorbers had let go. He replaced both, levelled the feet properly, and the machine now stays where it is put.

Water on the garage slab every wash day. It turned out to be a split hose at the drain outlet rather than the tub seal I had been dreading. Replaced inside an hour, and he mopped up after himself.

The door had dropped and stopped sealing, so everything came out cooked unevenly. Both hinges were bent. He replaced the pair, reset the door alignment, and put a new door gasket on while he was at it.
