Appliance Repair in Allied Gardens

Allied Gardens went up in one push in the 1950s and much of it still runs on the pipework laid then. Modern appliances move more water, faster, than those lines were sized for, and that mismatch produces most of what we get called out to here.

What is different about Allied Gardens

Original galvanised supply and cast drain lines narrow with scale over seventy years, and the effect on appliances is direct. A washer takes a long time to fill and the machine reports a fill fault; a dishwasher drains slowly and backs into the sink; a disposal that is perfectly healthy cannot clear a line that is half its original bore. Replacing the appliance part in any of those cases fixes nothing. We test flow and drainage before we touch a component, and where the pipework is the limit we tell you, because that is a plumbing job and not an appliance one. The laundry hookups here are generally still in their original garage position, which at least makes them easy to reach.

Original hookups from the fifties here, and the washer had started filling very slowly. Both inlet screens were furred up and one valve was failing. He replaced the valve, cleaned the screens, and checked the taps.

Fifties house on its original waste line, and the dishwasher drained slowly and then stopped. He proved the drain pump was the problem by testing it directly rather than blaming the plumbing, and replaced it.

The compressor ran without a break and the fridge still was not cold enough. Its start relay had failed and the compressor was straining. He replaced the relay and overload, then checked the current draw.

Bungalow laundry in a converted back room. Ours tumbled without heat, and somebody before him had replaced the element for nothing. He found an open thermal cutoff and a lint-packed housing sitting behind it.

The washer paused at the rinse and put a code on the display. Its inlet valve was partly blocked by sediment, which is what the water does out here. A new valve went in, and he suggested rinsing the screens out now and then.

The oven would not light although the cooktop burners were fine. Its igniter had weakened to the point where it never opened the gas valve. Replaced, and he checked the flame pattern before he left.

Allied Gardens questions

The washer takes forever to fill. Is the valve failing?

Sometimes, but in a house of this age the supply itself is more often the limit. Check the flow at the tap before condemning the valve. If the tap runs slowly too, the restriction is in the pipework and a new inlet valve will behave exactly the same way.

Do you do plumbing as well as appliance repair?

No. We diagnose and repair the appliance, and we identify plainly when the problem is the supply or the drain line. You get a clear description of what a plumber needs to do rather than a repair that will not solve the symptom.

Are parts still available for a twenty-year-old washer?

Often yes for mechanical parts, less often for control boards. Pumps, valves, belts and switches are widely available for mainstream models of that age. If a discontinued board is the fault, we say so before ordering anything and let you decide.
