Is it worth repairing a dishwasher, or should I replace it?

It depends on the part and the age. A pump, a valve, a heater or a control board on a machine under about ten years old is usually worth doing. A rusted tub, a failed motor on a budget unit, or two large parts at once is where we say replace and mean it.

Why does my dishwasher leave white residue on everything?

That is scale from hard water rather than a fault, in most of the machines we see here. Rinse aid and a periodic descale deal with it. If the residue is gritty instead of chalky, food is being redeposited, and that points at the spray arms or the wash pump instead.

The dishwasher and the sink both back up. Which one is the problem?

Usually neither on its own. The dishwasher drains into the disposal or a branch of the sink waste, so a blockage there stops both. We check whether the sink drains freely first, because if it does not, the dishwasher is only reporting a plumbing fault.

What does the visit cost?

The service call is $89. That covers coming out, diagnosing the fault and telling you what the repair involves, and it is waived when you approve the work. You get the full cost of parts and labour before anything is fitted, not after.

Do I need to empty the cabinet under the sink first?

It helps. The drain hose, the water stop and the disposal connection all live there, and clearing the cupboard saves time on the visit. If the machine has to come out, we also need the front of the unit clear and the floor in front of it free.

Standing water at the end of the cycle

Work the drain path in order. The filter and sump come first: on most machines they hold a season of grit, glass chips and label paper, and clearing them fixes a fair share of no-drain calls outright. Next is the drain hose, which is usually looped up under the sink and easy to kink when something is stored against it. If both are clear and the motor hums without moving water, the drain pump impeller is jammed or the pump has failed. A machine that drains slowly rather than not at all is more often the disposal knockout plug or a partly blocked air gap.

Film on the glass, grit in the cups

Hard water does most of this. Scale narrows the spray arm holes until the upper rack stops getting proper coverage, and food that is not rinsed off simply settles again. Check that the arms spin freely and that nothing tall in the lower rack is stopping them. Beyond that, a weak wash pump or a failed heating element leaves the water too cool to dissolve detergent, which reads as film on everything rather than grit in a few cups. Rinse aid and a hotter tap feed help, but they will not cover a pump that has lost pressure.

Leaks, and the ones that reach the floor

Most leaks show at the front because that is the lowest point, not because the door is the source. The common culprits are the door gasket, the sump seal under the wash pump, and a split fill hose at the inlet valve. A machine that overfills and spills over the door is usually a stuck float or a valve that will not close fully. Wood flooring and cabinet toe kicks absorb this quietly for weeks, so if you have seen water once, shut the supply at the stop under the sink and leave the machine off until it has been looked at.

Getting the machine out, in a tight kitchen

Anything past a filter clean means sliding the dishwasher forward, and that is where San Diego kitchens argue back. Stone counters are often bonded down over the mounting brackets, new flooring gets laid up to the door and traps the feet, and galley kitchens in older bungalows leave no room to swing the door while the unit is out. We check clearance before anything is unbolted. In a condo or a rental the water stop is sometimes behind a neighbouring cabinet or in a shared utility space, so it is worth knowing where yours is before the visit.
