Freezer Repair in San Diego
Garage freezers are the ones that fail here. A unit standing in a Poway or Rancho Bernardo garage in August works against ambient air far hotter than it was designed for, and a condenser packed with dust or salt makes it worse. Uprights, chests and freezer drawers all fail in their own way.
Frost on the back wall, warm food in the basket
Frost sheeting the rear panel is a defrost fault, not a sealing problem. The evaporator ices over, air stops moving through it, and the cabinet warms while the compressor runs harder than ever. The three parts involved are the defrost heater, the bimetal or sensor that tells the control when to run it, and the control board itself. We test which one has failed rather than replacing the set. A manual defrost gets the freezer working for a week or two, which is useful confirmation of the diagnosis but not a repair.
Running without ever stopping
A freezer that never cycles off is either losing cold or failing to reject heat. Losing cold means the door: a basket holding it open the last quarter inch, a dropped hinge, or a seal that has taken a set. Failing to reject heat means the condenser, and in a garage that is usually a coil packed solid with dust, or on the coast one with corrosion on the fins. The condenser fan is worth listening for. If the compressor is running and the fan is not, the cabinet will slowly lose the fight on a hot afternoon.
Diagnosis
What usually fails, and how you tell
01
Failed defrost heater
How it showsSolid frost on the rear panel and a cabinet that will not hold temperature.
The repairTest heater, sensor and control, then replace the part that has actually failed.
02
Blocked condenser coil
How it showsCompressor runs constantly and the cabinet sides feel hot.
The repairStrip and clean the coil, and check the fan is pulling air through it.
03
Failed evaporator fan
How it showsFreezer holds unevenly, with ice building in one area.
The repairReplace the fan motor and clear any ice that has fouled the blade.
04
Door seal that has taken a set
How it showsA visible gap at one corner and frost forming near it.
The repairReshape or replace the gasket and adjust the hinge so the door pulls square.
05
Failed start relay
How it showsA click every few minutes and no compressor run.
The repairTest the relay and overload, replace as a pair and check the compressor windings.
06
Misaligned drawer runner
How it showsThe drawer will not pull shut and the alarm sounds.
The repairRealign or replace the runner and reset the drawer front so it seals.
Chests, uprights and freezer drawers
A chest freezer holds cold better than anything else in the house and gives very little warning before it fails, because the mass of frozen food masks a slow decline. Uprights lose air every time the door opens, so they show a fault sooner. Drawer freezers in a kitchen run the tightest tolerances of the three and are the most sensitive to a runner that has gone out of alignment or a gasket that no longer pulls square. If a drawer will not shut fully, treat that as the fault rather than a nuisance.
What to do while you wait
If the cabinet is still below freezing, keep it shut. A full freezer holds temperature for the best part of a day unopened, and moving food twice does more damage than leaving it. If the unit has already thawed, empty it and leave the door open so the interior dries, because refreezing a warm cabinet full of water just re-ices the evaporator. Note whether the compressor is running when we arrive: a silent cabinet and a cabinet that runs without stopping point in completely different directions.
