Can you work on a stacked washer and dryer in a closet?

Yes, and most closet jobs are done in place. Pumps, valves, locks and belts come out through the front or the base. If the fault is at the back of the washer or in the bearings, the pair has to be separated, so we need the doors off and clear floor beside the closet.

I rent. Who books the repair?

Whoever pays for it. If the washer belongs to the building or the landlord, they normally have to approve the work before we start, and we will hold the diagnosis until they do. If the machine is yours, it is your call and the tenancy does not come into it.

Why does my front loader smell?

Residue in the door gasket and the detergent drawer, usually from cold washes and too much detergent. Wipe the gasket fold dry, leave the door ajar, and run a hot maintenance wash. If the smell survives that, the sump or the drain hose is holding sludge and needs clearing properly.

Is a bearing job worth doing?

Sometimes. On a mid-range or premium front loader with a sound drum and control board, yes. On a budget machine, the strip-down takes long enough that replacement usually wins. We give you that answer at the diagnosis rather than after the machine is in pieces.

What does a visit cost, and is the repair covered?

The service call is $89, waived when you approve the repair, and you hear the full cost before we fit anything. Completed repairs carry a 90-day warranty on parts and labour. If you decide not to go ahead, you pay the visit fee and nothing else.

Laundry is most of what we do. A large share of San Diego washers sit stacked in a closet or out in a shared garage, which changes the repair as much as the fault does. We work on front and top loaders from every mainstream brand, and we say up front when a machine has to come out.

Water still in the drum: pump, hose or pressure switch

These three fail in ways that look identical from the front. A blocked drain pump is the most common: coins, a bra wire or a sock get past the drum and stop the impeller, and the machine hums at the drain step without moving water. A drain hose pushed too far down a standpipe siphons, so the drum refills as fast as it empties. The pressure switch is the one people miss. Its sensing hose silts up, the control keeps reading water in the tub, and the cycle refuses to advance to the spin even though the drum is empty. We check all three before condemning a pump.

Why a front loader walks

A front loader that moves across the floor on the spin has usually lost its suspension. The struts or shock absorbers wear out, the drum stops being damped, and an unbalanced load turns into a machine that travels. Worn tub bearings sound different, a rising rumble that peaks near the top of the spin. Both are made worse by two things common here: a garage slab that is not flat, and transit bolts left in after a move. Check the feet are down and locked before anything else, because a machine sitting on three of four feet will walk no matter how good the suspension is.

Door locked shut, and cycles that never start

A front loader door stays locked while the control believes there is water or heat in the tub, so a lock that will not release is often a drain or pressure fault rather than a broken latch. When the latch itself has failed, the machine usually reports it as a door error early in the cycle. Top loaders use a lid lock switch that does the same job, and a worn one stops the spin without any other symptom. A machine that fills forever, or never fills, is the inlet valve or a screen furred up with scale, which happens quickly on hard water.

Stacked in a closet, or out in a shared garage

Most of the laundry we see downtown is a stacked pair in a hallway closet with bifold doors and about an inch of clearance either side. A pump, a valve or a lock can usually be done in place through the front or the base panel. Bearings, the outer tub or anything at the back means the pair comes apart and the washer comes out, and in a closet that needs the doors off and somewhere to stand the dryer. Shared garages add one more question: whether the machine is yours to approve or the building manager.
