San Diego water is hard, and ice makers are where you notice first. Scale narrows the fill valve, coats the tray, and turns a machine that made ice for years into one that makes a few hollow cubes a day. The rest of the calls are water arriving where it should not.

No ice at all

Work backwards from the tray. Is water reaching it? A fill tube frozen at the tip is the single most common cause, and it recurs unless the fill valve or the water pressure behind it is dealt with as well. Behind that sits the inlet valve itself, which fails half open or seizes shut with scale, and the shut-off arm or infrared sensor that stops production when the bin is full. A module that runs its harvest cycle with no water arriving will keep cycling and never make anything, which is why people assume the motor has failed when it has not.

One solid block, or cubes fused together

Ice that has welded into a single mass means the bin is not being emptied often enough, or the freezer is cycling above and below freezing and letting the surface melt and refreeze. On an in-freezer maker that usually traces back to the same defrost fault that would eventually warm the whole cabinet. A slow leak from the fill valve does it too: a dribble between cycles fills the tray, freezes over the cubes and locks the harvest arm. The block is a symptom, and lifting it out without finding the cause buys you two weeks.

Under-counter machines

A stand-alone under-counter ice maker is a refrigeration unit in its own right, and it fails like one. The condenser sits behind a narrow front grille, and in a bar or an outdoor kitchen that grille packs with dust until the machine cannot reject heat and production halves. Gravity-drain models block at the drain line and flood the cabinet base; pump models fail at the pump. Scale is the other constant here, and a machine on unsoftened San Diego water needs its cleaning cycle run far more often than the manual suggests.

Leaks and the water line

Most ice maker leaks are not the machine. The saddle valve on the supply, the compression fitting behind the refrigerator, and the plastic line itself all fail with age, and the water tracks along the floor to appear somewhere else entirely. We check the line before the appliance. Where a saddle valve is fitted, we would replace it with a proper stop while we are there, because they are the single most common source of a slow leak behind a kitchen unit and they rarely give warning.

Questions we get asked

Why are my cubes cloudy and hollow?

Cloudy is minerals, which is normal on hard water and gets worse as a filter ages. Hollow means the fill is stopping early, so the cube freezes from the outside in with nothing left in the middle. That is usually the inlet valve, a tired filter, or low pressure on the line.

How often should the water filter be changed?

Every six months is the usual guidance, and on San Diego water it is worth holding to rather than waiting for the light. A filter past its life restricts flow, which shows up as small cubes and a slow dispenser before it shows up as bad-tasting water.

The ice maker stopped after we had the water off. Why?

Air in the line, a stop valve that was not fully reopened, or debris shaken loose into the inlet screen. It is worth checking the valve at the wall first. If the fill is short rather than absent, the screen behind the inlet valve is the usual culprit and it cleans out easily.

Is it worth replacing the ice maker module or the whole fridge?

The module on its own, in almost every case. It is a self-contained assembly that comes out with a few screws and a plug, and it does not tell you anything about the health of the refrigerator around it. Whole-unit decisions belong to sealed-system faults, not ice makers.

Do you work on outdoor and bar ice makers?

Yes, the mainstream under-counter brands. Outdoor units live a harder life: the condenser fouls faster, and on a coastal patio the fins corrode as well. Most of what we do on them is cleaning, a drain or a valve, rather than anything deep in the refrigeration side.
