Hotpoint here is not the European brand of the same name. It is GE Appliances’ budget line, built in the same plants on the same platforms with fewer features and simpler controls. For a repair that is close to ideal: the pumps, elements, thermostats and belts are GE parts, widely stocked and inexpensive.

What Hotpoint builds

Hotpoint sells the plain version of a GE machine: top-load washers with a mechanical timer or a basic electronic control, matching electric and gas dryers, top-freezer refrigerators and freestanding ranges. There is very little on them that is not also on a GE, and many of the units still working in San Diego are old enough that the deciding question is parts availability rather than difficulty. Most of the time those parts are still made.

What we are called about

Dryer runs without heat

The heating element or a thermostat on electric models, the igniter or the valve coils on gas. As with any dryer, a thermal fuse that has opened is a symptom of restricted venting rather than the fault itself, so the duct gets cleared before the part goes in.

Washer fills but will not agitate or spin

On the older top-loaders this is the lid switch, the drive coupling or the transmission, in that order of likelihood. The switch and the coupling are inexpensive and quick. A failed transmission on a machine of this age is where the arithmetic usually stops.

Refrigerator frosting up or running warm

The defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or the timer. Older Hotpoint units use a mechanical defrost timer that can be tested directly, which makes the diagnosis quicker than on a board-controlled machine. The door gasket gets checked at the same time.

Gas oven will not light, or lights late

The glow-bar igniter weakens with age and stops drawing the current needed to open the safety valve, while still glowing brightly enough to look healthy. It is measured rather than judged by eye, and it is the most common single repair on these ranges.

Is Hotpoint the same as GE?

In the United States, yes: Hotpoint is a GE Appliances brand built on GE platforms. The specification is plainer and the controls are simpler, but the mechanical parts largely cross over. That makes a Hotpoint cheaper to repair than its reputation suggests, because nothing about it is obscure.

Can you still get parts for an old Hotpoint?

For the common wear items, usually yes, because they are shared with GE models that stayed in production much longer. Cosmetic parts, timers and control boards for discontinued units are the ones that run out. We confirm availability before recommending the repair rather than after it.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

For a pump, an element, a switch, a thermostat or an igniter, almost always. Those are quick jobs on a machine that will keep running for years afterwards. A failed transmission or a cracked outer tub on a machine already well into its life is the point to stop.

Do you work on Hotpoint ranges as well as laundry?

Yes, gas and electric. On the gas ranges the igniter, the safety valve and the surface electrodes cover most of what goes wrong. On electric models it is the bake element, the sensor and the surface unit receptacles, which burn at the contact and are easy to overlook.
